Special Topic: Augmented Reality in 21st Century Learning

Standard

After reading Horizon Report for years, I figure out that augmented reality is really an undeniable trend in education.  However, we are not familiar with it.  It is our pleasure and honor to have Dr. Jim Mathews with us today to talk more about augmented reality.  Jim and his colleagues developed this open resource education materials– Augmented Reality Interactive Storytelling (ARIS).  Everyone who has an iOS system device can download it and work with your students for free.  Jim described this kind of augmented reality application is like soft augmented reality that is proper and accessible for everyone.  He also said it is related to the idea of place-based learning.  So, let’s welcome Jim to share more about this concept with us today!

FOR WEDNESDAY:

COULD

  • Keep the dialogue you have with your peers in blogs.
  • Work on your reflection 6 (Due on Sept. 30).

SHOULD

  • find time to work with your partners if you can’t finish taking footage before next Wednesday.

PART I: AUGMENTED REALITY

Remember, our guest speaker will be talking about augmented reality next Monday!  It is a new trend and a lot of us still don’t have clear idea about it.  I want you to start searching, exploring, playing…because that is one choice of your final project. You can find the apps choices in the Web 2.0 tool/ Apps page HERE.

For the reflection 6, it is NOT due next Monday.  However, you need to finish reading two things before you come back next Monday (September 23).  That will help you understand what Jim is going to talk about.  It is really a wonderful chance to meet with a game designer.  Please follow the instruction for reflection 6.

PART II: STOP ANIMATION INFOMERCIAL WORKDAY

Please keep working on your stop animation artifacts or keep taking footage/ or start to take footage.  Remember, when you come back next Wednesday, you need to have all the images for the animation.  You will NOT be able to work next Monday due to the guest speaker session.

You need to finish taking the footage you need when you come back on Sep.25.  Then you will have time to work on the editing.  So, MEET WITH YOUR PARTNER(S).

PART I: WHAT WE LEARNED FROM GUEST SPEAKERS

First of all, I want to say thank you all for having great discussion with both guest speakers.  And I want to apologize to all of you in the first class.  So sorry for the delay and thank you for being patient and showing your respect.  Dr. Watson was really sorry about that too, but he just has too much good stuff that he wants to share with you all.

I hope you get some more ideas about the mythologies in education.  For example, the myth of learning style was quite surprising to me when I heard that last year.  Also, I hope that you get to understand the biggest myth about multitasking in 21st century learning.  How much you can be distracted when several things going on around you…If you want to focus on your study, now you know how to create that learning environment.  And maybe you have better ideas to help your future students as well.

PART II: AUGMENTED REALITY

I figured out that a lot of you are still confused with the idea of using augmented reality in education.  Therefore, I want to spend a little bit time to talk about it before we “virtually” meet our guest speaker next Monday.

Please tell me what your understanding about augmented reality is.

You read the Horizon Report a few weeks ago.  Is Google Glass a kind of augmented reality?  Project Glass?  App?  Like the one created by Jim and his group?  There are a lot of augmented reality apps out there.  I want you to start searching, exploring, playing…because that is one choice of your final project. You can find the apps choices in the Web 2.0 tool/ Apps page HERE.

I am not good at augmented reality either; however, I think this is the trend that 21st century learning is moving to…so I hope we can all be the pioneers to play with this idea.

For the reflection 6, it is NOT due next Monday.  However, you need to finish reading two things before you come back next Monday (September 23).  That will help you understand what Jim is going to talk about.  It is really a wonderful chance to meet with a game designer.  Please follow the instruction for reflection 6.

Special Topic: Multitasking in 21st Century Learning

Standard

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  We had Dr. Deissler as our guest speaker last Friday.  She led us go through a librarian’s head to understand more about the challenges and duties that a media specialist has every day in 21st century learning.  I hope you enjoyed the discussion with her.

Today, we are so honored to have another guest speaker– Dr. Eddie Watson.  Dr. Eddie Watson is the director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at UGA now. Before coming to UGA, Dr. Watson was the associate director of the Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research at Virginia Tech.  Most of Dr. Watson’s research is related to the topic about the collaboration across the boundaries of disciplines in order to create opportunities for professors and students in higher education to achieve the goals.  As we ll know, 21st century learners are very different.  Today Dr. Watson will lead us to unveil some of the myths about 21st century learners, especially the myth of multitasking.

FOR WEDNESDAY:

COULD

  • Reflect on what you heard/ learned from Dr. Watson today.
  • Keep the dialogue you have with your peers in blogs.
